A classical musician and cat lover, Kelley Niiyama has always been drawn to animal welfare. So when the owners of Nine Lives Cat Cafe decided to sell the business, Kelley and her husband Hidetaka jumped at the chance. They purchased Nine Lives Cat Café in 2020, merely 8 days before the COVID-19 lockdown, and founded IndyAdopts! a year later in 2021.
IndyAdopts! was created with the intention of supporting adoptions at Nine Lives Cat Cafe. In one year since the organization’s inception, over 1,400 cats have found their forever homes. IndyAdopts! fills in the gaps that our shelter partners cannot support, such as providing food, litter, and enrichment for the cats in the lounge.
Kelley’s passion for animals doesn’t stop with the cats in the cat lounge — she is also deeply empathetic towards cats with FIV. Through programs and educational seminars at IndyAdopts!, she aims to dismantle common FIV myths that make it harder for FIV-positive cats to find loving homes.
